Bristol's environmental agenda attracts interest from Gordon Brown

Bristol delegation in Brussels for European Green Capital Award
Earlier this week a delegation from Bristol came to Brussels to present their application for the European Green Capital bid in the second evaluation round. The aim of this award is to help cities become more healthy and attractive places by demonstrating a commitment towards sustainable development. Bristol is the only UK city to be shortlisted for this award and has worked extensively towards ensuring that high environmental standards have been achieved throughout the city, for example being chosen as the UK's first Cycling City in 2008. The following European cities have also been named as finalists; Amsterdam in Holland, Copenhagen in Denmark, the German cities of Freiburg, Hamburg and Munster, Oslo in Norway and Stockholm in Sweden. Gordon Brown has subsequently expressed his interest in visiting the city of Bristol to learn more about their efforts towards achieving a sustainable economy. The winners of the European Green Capital award are due to be announced later this year.
