Bath in the CIVITAS Programme

Bath is among the 25 EU cities to be included in CIVITAS, an innovative and competitive European Commission programme aiming to enhance cleaner and better transport in cities. The city has developed two interesting initiatives: ULTra Personal Rapid Transit and RENAISSANCE project. Seeking to improve transport in urban environments, the ULTra project has launched a design competition in order to get the best system that adapts to the needs of a city such as Bath. Under RENAISSANCE, Bath & North East Somerset Council is working to introduce a service for cycle hire (Bath Measure 6.4) and powered cycle hire (Bath Measure 6.5) in Bath. RENAISSANCE also facilitates setting up a Freight Consolidation Depot on the outskirts of the city (Bath Measure 7.2) in order to restrict access to non low-emission vehicles from Bath city centre towards the end of 2010.
