External Co-operation

The EU is a global actor and is taking on more and more responsibilities in the relationships it develops across the world.  Its major objective is to promote European values and act as a force for stability, cooperation and understanding.  To meet this challenge, the EU has developed a Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).  The CFSP is an attempt to harmonise EU relations with third countries in order to act as a unified and coherent whole.

For the 2007-2013 programming period, EU external relations will focus on:

  • Assistance to pre-accession countries
  • Neighbourhood relations and privileged partnerships
  • Development cooperation programmes to help developing countries achieve the Millenium Development Goals
  • Stability in third countries
  • External relations programmes with Asia and Latin America
